SANTA CRUZ >> Police are investigating a noninjury shooting that took place Sunday evening in the Beach Flats neighborhood.
Officers were called at 6:22 p.m. to the area near the Beach Flats Park for a reporting shooting, according to Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Jon Bush.
Bush said that multiple individuals in a pickup truck exchanged gunfire with an individual on foot in the area. The truck drove out of the area and the individual on foot left on a bicycle, Bush said.
“Neither party, at this point, that we know of, were struck by bullets,” Bush said.
The department had no one in custody Monday related to the shooting and no victims had come forward to identify themselves, Bush said. With the help of video footage, officers were able to identify and locate an abandoned truck that investigators believe was involved in the shooting. He added that Santa Cruz police is working with the Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Taskforce on the case.
“Every shooting that we have is a serious one and it’s investigated, even if nobody is struck,” Bush said. “The potential for somebody to get struck by a stray round is just as concerning to us.”
Bush said he was unable to rule out or confirm any gang motivations for the shooting in a neighborhood that has experienced an uptick in gang-related shootings in the past couple of months, Bush said.
