CAPITOLA >> A Capitola woman walking in the area of Bay Street and Crossroads Loop was struck and killed by a passing SUV Saturday night, according to police.
Capitola Police Department detectives are seeking the public’s help in identifying the driver, who will be under investigation for vehicular manslaughter after leaving the scene of the crash, according to Capitola Police Chief Andy Dally. With the help of an anonymous community member’s support, the department is offering a $10,000 cash reward for anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver, he said.
Emergency responders were called around 8:30 p.m. to the 800 block of Bay Avenue, about 20 feet east of the crosswalk at Crossroads Loop, for a report of a pedestrian down in the middle of the road. The pedestrian, a woman in her 70s who lived just blocks away, died at the scene despite life-saving measures, Dally said.
“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family as they process the news of this incident,” department officials posted to their social media account Sunday.
Detectives are asking those who witnessed the crash or may have useful video camera footage in the area of Hill Street and Crossroads Loop to call police at 831-475-4242. In particular, police are urging Tesla drivers with Sentry Mode enabled and any drivers with active dashcams to share their footage.
