SANTA CRUZ >> A 37-year-old man is behind bars this week after being arrested on suspicion of attempted murder for an injury stabbing last week.
Jay June Jr., who has been experiencing homelessness in Santa Cruz, was arrested Saturday and later booked into Santa Cruz County Jail in connection with a Nov. 13 assault on the 1300 block of Ocean Street.
According to Santa Cruz police, June stabbed a 46-year-old man who also was experiencing homelessness. The two men reportedly knew each other and had gotten into a dispute over property ownership prior to the stabbing, according to police. June allegedly left the scene while his victim was taken to an area hospital for care. The stabbing victim was expected to survive his wounds.
June remained held without bail Monday on suspicion of attempted murder, a felony, two counts of misdemeanor resisting arrest and two misdemeanor counts of possessing unlawful paraphernalia. No charges had been filed by the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office by end-of-day Monday. Court records show he had pleaded no contest earlier this year to charges of cruelty to an animal, vandalism and petty theft, for which his one-year jail term was suspended.
