Quarterback Brock Purdy agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $265 million with the San Francisco 49ers, going from the NFL’s biggest bargain to one of the league’s highest-paid players.
Multiple sources reported the extension that includes $181 million in total guarantees. NFL Network first reported the deal.
Purdy has earned less than $1 million a year for his first three seasons and was set to get a small raise in 2025 to about $5.2 million under the league’s proven performance escalator for making the Pro Bowl last season before reaching this new deal that puts Purdy in the top 10 in quarterback contracts.
The Niners got this deal done with Purdy with no drama. He reported to the start of the offseason program and now has his new contract before on-field practices start later this month.
The New York Jets released kicker Greg Zuerlein, 37, an expected move as the team continues to get younger on its revamped roster. Zuerlein spent the past three seasons with the Jets.
TENNIS
Jannik Sinner has gone all the way to the final in his first tournament back from a three-month doping ban.
Carlos Alcaraz is waiting for him in the Italian Open title match.
The top-ranked Sinner rallied past No. 12 Tommy Paul 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals as he attempts to become the first Italian man to lift the Rome trophy since Adriano Panatta in 1976.
Alcaraz advanced to his first Rome final by beating Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Sunday’s final will mark the first meeting between Sinner and Alcaraz since October, when Alcaraz won the China Open final in a third-set tiebreaker. Alcaraz holds a 6-4 edge in his career meetings with Sinner and has won three straight against his biggest rival.
But Sinner has not lost since that defeat to Alcaraz in Beijing and is on a 26-match winning streak. He’s playing his first tournament since he won his third Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January.
“He’s playing great. I’ve been watching his matches,” Alcaraz said. “His level is really high right now. Every time that I play against him is always a battle, always really, really tough. I kind of enjoy (those) moments.”
Rome is the last big warmup before the French Open starts on May 25.
It’s the third final in three clay-court events this season for Alcaraz, who won the Monte Carlo Masters and finished runner-up in the Barcelona Open. He withdrew from the Madrid Open because of injury.
The third-ranked Alcaraz withdrew from the Madrid tournament with an upper right leg issue and also had a left leg injury. In Rome, he has been wearing a long black brace covering the upper portion of his right leg stretching down to just below his knee.
MOTORSPORTS
NASCAR star Kyle Larson crashed for the second time in the lead-up to the Indianapolis 500 when he lost control of his Arrow McLaren entry and hit the wall in the final practice session before this weekend’s qualifying runs.
The damage was relatively minor, though, and it only took Larson’s team about an hour to make repairs to the front and rear of the car. That allowed him to get in some precious laps with about 30 minutes left in the 6-hour session.
Larson, who also crashed on April 24 during an open test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is taking his second shot at trying to complete “the Double” by running the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Larson finished 18th in the rain-delayed 500 last year, but he never ran a lap in the NASCAR race in Charlotte when rain there ended the race early.
CYCLING
Primož Roglic took the overall lead of the Giro d’Italia and Juan Ayuso impressed with his victory in the first summit finish.
The Spaniard earned his first Grand Tour stage victory with a burst of energy 400 yards before the end of the seventh stage, ahead of his UAE Team Emirates teammate Isaac Del Toro and Egan Bernal.
Roglic, the pre-race favorite and 2023 champion, crossed next — the peloton 4 seconds back.
It was good enough for Roglic to take the pink jersey. Ayuso improved to second overall, trailing Roglic by 4 seconds. Del Toro was third, 9 seconds off the lead.
Friday’s stage was the hardest so far with four classified climbs on the 104-mile route from Castel di Sangro, including the top-category ascent to the finish in Tagliacozzo.
