Arcadia sophomore right fielder Tyler Brereton wound up being the hero of Thursday’s CIF Southern Section Division 1 baseball playoff game against Aliso Niguel after going hitless over the first 10 innings.

Brereton’s walk-off single in the 11th inning scored Julian Salmon to give Arcadia a 2-1 victory.

The Apaches (26-3) advance to Tuesday’s second round of the playoffs. They will be on the road against Mira Costa (27-2), a 2-0 winner over Arlington in the first round.

With runners on second and third in the 11th, Brereton hit a line drive single over the head of Aliso Niguel left fielder Hudson Covington to bring home the winning run.

“I couldn’t believe it, to be honest,” said Brereton, who struck out in his previous three at-bats. “I’ve been struggling recently, and I couldn’t win a hit for a while. But I guess it doesn’t matter now. I feel really good right now.”

Arcadia senior center fielder Leo Peniche opened the 11th inning with a single to right. That was followed by intentional walks to Salmon and junior pitcher Damian Catano to load the bases.

After a double play nearly ended the threat, Salmon came home from third on Brereton’s hit.

LOS ALAMITOS 4, LA MIRADA 2: Los Alamitos escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh inning to hold off La Mirada for a victory Thursday in the opening round of the Division 1 playoffs.

Griffins starter Tristin Dalzell earned the win by pitching six innings and allowing two runs on three hits, five walks, two hit batters and striking out seven. Perhaps more impressively, Logan Anderson earned the save by striking out the side in the seventh after entering with the bases loaded and no outs.

Los Alamitos’ offense came from Tyler Smith, who went 1 for 3 with a two-RBI single and Nate Walker, who also had a two-RBI single.

Los Alamitos (19-9-2), which finish third in the Sunset League, took its first lead in third inning with a two-out rally. After loading the bases, all with two outs, Smith hit a two-run single to center field to put Los Alamitos up 2-0.

La Mirada (21-8), the Gateway League champion, erased the lead in its half of the third. With the bases loaded and no outs, Kevin Jeon hit a hard ground ball to right field to score pinch runner Aaron Sykes. Then Aiden Aguayo chopped a ground ball fielder’s choice to score Jacob Celiz and tie the game.

Los Alamitos took the lead for good in the fourth inning when Walker hit a two-run single to left field to give Los Alamitos a 4-2 lead.
