For those interested in health care, a medical assistant apprenticeship offers a unique opportunity to earn an income while gaining valuable hands-on experience.

At Macomb, students in the medical assistant apprenticeship program split their time between classroom learning and working for an employer. Students typically spend two to three days a week in each setting.

Students work directly with patients, applying skills learned in the classroom under the supervision of experienced mentors. This hands-on experience is crucial for developing practical skills and confidence. The apprenticeship lasts about two years, during which students complete 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and coursework.

“Starting from day one, medical assistant apprentices earn a salary, which typically ranges from $12-$16 an hour, with potential increases as they progress,” said Paula Primeau, associate dean of the Health Sciences and Technology program at Macomb. Primeau added that upon program completion, pay rates usually increase to $18 to $22 an hour.

For the apprenticeship, Macomb staff connects students with employers who have open positions. In the past year, 10 students have completed their medical assistant apprenticeships, with another 10 currently enrolled and eight in pre-apprenticeship courses. Most apprentices are hired full-time after training, and the national certification allows them to work anywhere in the country.

“Apprenticeships are a great way to begin a health care career,” Primeau said. “This immediate employment and tailored training provide a competitive edge when applying for jobs or preparing for certification.”
