In today’s fast-moving, tech-filled world, digital marketing is an essential tool for all types of businesses.
Digital marketing is made up of strategies aimed at reaching and engaging customers online. From making sure websites show up in search results, called search engine optimization (SEO), to using social media, digital marketing helps businesses connect with people all over the world.
“The main advantage for students to major in digital marketing is that there are a growing number of high paying jobs available,” said Monique Beauchamp, digital marketing professor at Macomb.
For example, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, SEO marketing specialists saw a 14 percent job increase in 2023. The median pay for this field was $70,760 last year.
At Macomb, students can study digital marketing to earn a certificate or an associate degree.
The degree option is new and is in response to the evolving industry, which continues to adjust due to technology and consumer needs. The degree program, which started in the fall of 2024, includes classes in marketing, information technology, and media and communications arts.
“We decided to offer a degree in digital marketing mainly because of the changing nature of this field,” Beauchamp said. “More and more, marketing is focused on digital and we wanted to give students an option that prepares them for a career in this growing field.”
Those interested in earning a four-year degree in digital marketing should consider one of Macomb’s university partners.
The certificate option includes a limited number of marketing classes on social media, SEO and pay-per click advertising. It is ideal for someone who is working in the field of marketing and wants to enhance their digital skills.
“Someone starting their education and marketing career might consider the digital marketing degree,” Beauchamp said. “Someone working in the field of marketing might want to complete the certificate to enhance their digital skills.”
