A Royal Oak woman accused of murdering her mother will undergo psychiatric evaluation to determine competency, a judge has ruled.
At a recent hearing in 44th District Court, Judge Andrew Kowalkowski ordered the testing for Jennifer Suzanne Cataldo, charged with first-degree murder for allegedly attacking her mother, Leslie Ann Cataldo of Fenton.
Officials said Leslie Cataldo had called police for help from an apartment in the 3600 block of Crooks Road on June 4, reporting that her daughter was experiencing a mental health crisis and needed to be taken to a hospital. When officers arrived, they found Leslie Cataldo unresponsive, having suffered a severe neck wound. She was transported to Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak where she underwent emergency surgery but died the next day. She was 66.
Without further incident, Jennifer Cataldo was taken into custody at the apartment— where she lived — police said.
As stated in her obituary, Leslie Cataldo had five children and four grandchildren, and worked for Beaumont Hospital for 20 years.
Jennifer Cataldo’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 12.
