A 28-year-old man died Sunday after being struck by a semi-truck while running on Interstate 75 in Detroit, officials said.
Michigan State Police said they received reports at about 6:30 p.m. of a person running in and out of traffic on the freeway near Seven Mile Road.
Troopers arrived and found a Detroit man in the roadway with serious injuries, according to authorities.
Medics took the man to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, MSP said.
Officials said the freeway was temporarily closed while they conducted an investigation.
Detectives said the man ran into I-75’s left center lane and was struck by a semi.
State police said they believe the man was having a mental health crisis.
“If you are not feeling ok, there are a lot of people you can talk to,” MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said in a statement on X. “You are not alone. You can reach out to friends, relatives, clergy members, or police. There is also the 988 hotline that you can call or text and find the resources in your area.”
The incident is among the most recent crashes resulting in a pedestrian’s death.
Last month, a Genesee County man died after being struck by a car while standing next to his disabled vehicle on I-75 in northern Oakland County.
Also in May, a 52-year-old Warren man died after he was struck by a car while walking naked on a Washtenaw County freeway. This month, a 20-year-old man was arrested in connection with the crash.
In April, a man died after he was struck by a car as he walked across a freeway service drive in Southfield.
Michigan saw 2,114 crashes involving pedestrians in the state in 2023, according to the latest statistics from MSP. They also said 183 pedestrians died in those crashes. That compares with 1,897 pedestrian-involved crashes and 173 pedestrian deaths in 2022.
In 2023, Wayne County recorded 686 crashes involving pedestrians, with 60 of those fatal. The county had the most pedestrian-involved crashes and fatal crashes involving pedestrians in the state.
