Records through Monday

1. LA MIRADA (5-2)

After a 5-0 start, the Matadores ended last week with a 10-2 loss to Millikan and a 10-1 loss to Norco. They head to the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions in Arizona this week. The Mats have top-end pitching with senior Montserrat Reyes-Cardenas, a San Diego State commit. Before hitting the panic button, wait to see how La Mirada fares in the tournament.

2. SONORA (8-0)

The Raiders are off to a start that could land them in the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs. This is the first year where computer rankings decide the playoff divisions. Their 6-1 victory over La Serna is one reason to believe they’re the real deal.

3. LA SERNA (3-1)

The Lancers pounded Long Beach Poly 13-9 after their lone setback, a 6-1 loss to Sonora. They return seven All-Del Rio League selections. They won’t play again until they open league play against El Rancho on March 13.

4. CALIFORNIA (3-3)

A surprisingly average start for a Condors squad that has two of the area’s best pitchers in Pricilla Ramirez and junior Alexis Salas. After losses to Alta Loma (4-3) and Cypress (6-2), they bounced back with a 9-2 win over Kennedy.

5. SOUTH HILLS (4-2)

The Huskies have been a run-producing machine with 63 runs over their first six games. They have won two straight, beating West Covina (16-0) and Elsinore (7-1). Sophomore Charli Moreno and junior Victoria Roman each have two home runs.

6. BONITA (4-1)

The Bearcats have continued to pound the ball, beating rival San Dimas 17-0. In their four wins they outscored their opponents by a combined 44-5. The loss was to Ayala, 13-7, in the championship of their own tournament.

7. CHARTER OAK (1-0)

Freshman Hazel Renteria had a triple and two RBIs in their l4-2 win over Downey. Not much else to go on, but the Chargers were 19-3-1 last season and return standout sophomore pitcher Leila Diebert, who was 15-2 with a 1.30 ERA last season.

8. LOS ALTOS (2-0)

The Conquerors have wins over Norwalk (11-1) and Muir (6-2). The key will be how freshman pitcher Kaylahni Duenas holds up. She’s been great to start the season. Los Altos also has arguably the area’s best player in shortstop Brianah Alejandre, a UCLA commit.

9. GANESHA (6-4-1)

For a team in the Miramonte League, the Giants are taking on some of the best teams in the Southern Section. They performed well in wins over Etiwanda (1-0) and Corona Centennial (4-2). Losses have been to JSerra (2-0), Norco (5-0) and Yucaipa (5-3). Will be interesting to see what playoff division they end up in.

10. WHITTIER CHRISTIAN (4-3)

The Heralds stopped a three-game losing streak with a 10-4 win against El Dorado. They have consistently been one of the area’s top programs over the years, but this could be the season they take a step back.
