The Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band will present “America’s Heroes: Celebrating Our Veterans,” a concert featuring patriotic music, 7:30 p.m. Monday at Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium on the campus of Chaffey High School, 1245 N. Euclid Ave., Ontario.
Admission is free, and before the concert, the Woodwind Celebration Ensemble will perform beginning at 7 p.m. in the lobby where coffee and cookies will be available.
Featured soloist will be singer Brian Detwiler who has performed many times at Veterans Day and Memorial Day programs. The program will also feature the cadets of Chaffey High School Navy Junior ROTC, under the leadership of Martin Jones, and VFW Honor Rifle Salute Teams 18 and 56, according to a news release.
The first part of the concert, conducted by David Schaafsma, one of the band’s assistant directors, will include the presentation of colors, the national anthem, posting of the colors, invocation by retired Pastor Gary Keith, a performance of each of the U.S. armed services songs, flag-folding ceremony, a 21-gun salute and taps. Also included will be several patriotic selections.
In the second part of the concert, the band will play patriotic music, Detwiler will sing “This is My Country” and “Goodnight Saigon,” and Rob Van Riel will narrate the story of the 56-star flag. The concert will conclude with a performance of Richard Rodgers’ score to “Victory at Sea.”
Narrators will be Christina Martinez, principal of Chaffey High School, and Rob Van Riel.
The concert will be broadcast on local Ontario cable Channel 3.
The Ontario Chaffey Community Show Band, founded in 1985 by R. Jack Mercer, is directed by Gabe Petrocelli and assistant directors David Schaafsma and Pat Arnold. Band members represent communities throughout Southern California, and adult and student musicians are invited to join the band.
