Kick times and TV networks are now decided for Michigan State football’s first three non-conference games.

As part of a big schedule reveal for its 18 member teams, the Big Ten announced that Michigan State will play its Week 1 game against Western Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29 at Spartan Stadium, the game to be broadcast on FS1. The Spartans host Boston College at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6 on NBC. In Week 3, Michigan State’s home game against Youngstown State will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 on Big Ten Network. Michigan State’s homecoming game will be Oct. 11 against UCLA.

Since 2011, all but two Michigan State openers occurred on a Friday night, a tradition that will be honored this season against the Broncos. Western Michigan will receive a $1.5 million guarantee, according to a game contract The Detroit News obtained via the Freedom of Information Act, the same as 2022’s opener between the two teams. Since the schools’ first meeting in 1980, Michigan State holds a perfect 12-0 record against the Broncos, 11 of those coming at Spartan Stadium. Western Michigan went 6-7 last season with a bowl game loss to South Alabama.

Week 2’s game against Boston College is the return trip for Michigan State’s visit to Chestnut Hill last season. The Spartans led that game 13-6 at halftime but lost 23-19 to snap a 3-0 start. The Spartans won just two games the rest of the season. Michigan State owns a 1-5-1 record against Boston College dating to 1935, though the Spartans won at home in 1995. The Eagles went 7-6 last season and 4-4 in the ACC, with a bowl game loss to Nebraska.

Michigan State has played Youngstown State three times, winning all three, most recently in 2021. The Spartans are paying a $725,000 guarantee to their opponent, according to a contract obtained by FOIA. The Penguins finished 4-8 in the Football Championship Subdivision last season.

Last season, the Spartans did not play a single noon game the length of the season, playing seven night games instead. This year, at least one game will be at noon: the Oct. 11 homecoming game against UCLA. The Spartans are 3-3 against UCLA all time, last playing in 1974.

This season will be the second under head coach Jonathan Smith, led by second-year quarterback Aidan Chiles. The Spartans finished 5-7 last season, narrowly missing out on a bowl game by losing its final game to Rutgers.
