BIRMINGHAM >> To end a 13-year regional championship drought, the Birmingham United boys lacrosse team wanted to connect with the last Bulldog team to claim postseason hardware.
Birmingham United did that by digging into the closet and pulling out the yellow uniforms the 2012 team won when it claimed the last regional title for the program.
The extra mojo seemed to work, as the Bulldogs scored the final six goals of Wednesday’s game at Birmingham Seaholm High School to best Livonia United, 11-5.
“After we won the OAA, we said we were aiming for a regional championship,” said Birmingham United’s Brody Feldmaier. “It’s a great feeling. It’s been 13 years, and we wore these exact uniforms then that we had on today.”
Feldmaier was the offensive spark the Bulldogs (13-6) needed throughout the night. He scored seven of the team’s 11 goals, including five in the final six-goal rally.
“The kid continues to step up in big moments,” Birmingham United coach Nick Stensen said of Feldmaier. “What he means to us, is a regional championship. Seven goals, that’s a big night.”
With the score tied 5-5 midway through the third, the Bulldogs were looking to shift momentum after Livonia United (10-6) had scored the last two goals of the match.
In the closing minute of the third, the Bulldogs managed to work the ball to Feldmaier, who buried a pair of goals, including one with four seconds on the clock to make it 7-5 entering the fourth.
“We just started moving the ball better and playing a team offense,” Feldmaier said of the late surge.
That momentum carried into the fourth, as Feldmaier netted another goal just nine seconds into the period.
“I don’t know that anything specific changed, I think they just started believing in themselves a little bit more,” Stensen said. “We had a few breaks go our way, too. It’s a game of runs.”
As Birmingham United expanded the lead, Livonia United took multiple penalties to leave it with much chance of rallying.Once the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Bulldogs stormed the field to celebrate the first regional title in over a decade.
“It means everything, but I can’t take any of the credit,” Stensen said.
“It’s all about the kids on the field. They earned it.”
James Liebler, Frank Hill, Jake Coyle and Beckett Bambrough also scored in the win for Birmingham United, while Conrad Swanson came through with six saves.
Livonia United was led by Bryce Napier, who had three goals.
The Bulldogs advance to Friday’s Division 1 quarterfinal, where they won’t have to travel far.
Meanwhile, Birmingham United will be hosting Rockford at 7 p.m. from Birmingham Seaholm High School.
“We need to just keep doing what we are doing well,” Feldmaier said of Friday’s contest.
“If we do that, we are going to win.”
