More than 30 local men, women and children, all cancer survivors, will walk the runway as volunteer models and fundraisers in the May 10 Survivor Strut fashion show at Garner Holt Productions, 1255 Research Drive, Redlands.
The event, a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, will also include nearly 10 cancer survivors from across the country participating as virtual models, according to a news release.
Models will include Darcy McNaboe. former mayor of Grand Terrace and regional charitable giving officer with the Inland Empire Community Foundation; 13-year-old Avery Cebellos, an athlete and two-time leukemia survivor; Mike Fine, chief executive officer at California’s Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team; and Michael Dobkowski, founder and client services leader at Glacial Multimedia Inc.
The event begins at 5 p.m., and Leticia Juarez of ABC7 will serve as mistress of ceremonies, honoring her late sister, Pam.
General admission tickets are $50 and VIP tickets are $100, available at survivorstrutlls.betterworld.org.
Dianne Callahan, a three-time survivor of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and survivor of breast cancer, launched the Survivor Strut fashion show in 2008, after she achieved remission from her first fight with blood cancer.
“The idea behind the Survivor Strut was to create an event that raised funds and spirits,” Callahan said in the news release. “Going through cancer is so hard on you physically and emotionally. I wanted this event to be about celebrating our survival and delighting in the life that we still get to live while helping to ensure more patients get the cutting-edge treatments they need to survive.”
The first year, the event featured 10 female models. Mary Parks of Riverside was the celebrity mistress of ceremonies and the event raised about $3,500, according to the news release.
Parks and her twin sister, Melanie, have both died of brain cancer, and they will be remembered at this year’s Survivor Strut, along with past models who have died.
This year marks the ninth production of the Survivor Strut, and the goal is to raise up to $50,000 for cancer research, according to the news release.
