The San Bernardino Area chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will hold a NAMI Walk, an event to promote mental health awareness and support, May 4 at Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernardino.
This year’s theme is “We’re Giving Our All for Mental Health for All,” and the walk is part of activities across the nation to celebrate May as Mental Health Awareness Month, according to a news release.
At the event, registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by opening ceremony at 9 a.m. and the walk at 10 a.m. Costumes, team signs and themed attire are welcome.
The 1.5-mile walk through Glen Helen Regional Park is intended to symbolize the collective journey toward better mental health.
The event will include family-friendly games and entertainment, and there will be resources and referrals available for mental health services.
“Our goal is to raise over $100,000 in donations and sponsorships to expand and continue providing life-changing evidenced-based free programs for those challenged by mental health issues and their families,” Lori J. Butler, new executive director of NAMI San Bernardino Area, said in the news release.
“San Bernardino is the largest geographic county in California and this walk can be a catalyst for our movement and dream to see that no one in this huge area goes without mental health services and support,” Wolfgang Hall, San Bernardino Area chapter president, said in the news release. “We invite everyone to join us in this important cause.”
Participants are encouraged to form teams for the walk, set a team fundraising goal, wear matching outfits and carry banners or signs.
“Building a team amplifies the message of hope and solidarity,” Jessica Madrid, walk manager for NAMI San Bernardino, said in the news release. “It’s a powerful way to engage more people in the cause and make a greater impact together.”
Funds raised from the event will support NAMI San Bernardino Area’s ongoing programs, which provide education, advocacy and support services to people affected by mental illness and to their families.
There is no fee to register for the walk. Those who donate or raise at least $100 will receive an event T-shirt.
