The Santa Rosa Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint this week at an undisclosed location, officials announced.

The checkpoint is scheduled from 6 p.m. Friday, April 17, to 2 a.m. Saturday, April 18, and is part of an ongoing effort to reduce impaired driving and improve road safety, officials said.

The operation is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While the checkpoint was pre-scheduled as part of the grant-funded program, it comes one week after a fatal crash in Novato in which the teenage driver was reportedly under the influence, underscoring ongoing concerns about impaired driving in the region.

Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing a history of crashes involving impaired drivers. The primary goal, officials said, is to deter dangerous behavior and remove suspected impaired drivers from the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” the department said in a statement. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

Authorities reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can also affect a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. While marijuana is legal for medicinal and recreational use in California, driving under its influence remains illegal.

Drivers arrested for a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, in addition to a suspended driver’s license, according to police.
