IOWA – A 17-year-old Medina High School student died in a car crash along Interstate 80 in western Iowa Feb. 24.
The Iowa State Patrol said the crash occurred just before 6:30 p.m. when a 2016 Kia Sportage traveling east veered onto the shoulder and rear-ended a 2005 Honda Civic that had pulled off the road. Angel Martinez was a backseat passenger in the Honda and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda, 36-year-old Fabian Prado, of Brunswick, was taken to a hospital and released the next day.
Martinez was reportedly one of two people who died in crashes across the state that day, which was experiencing blizzard conditions at the time.
A GoFundMe page was set up to help to help Martinez’s family and nearly $5,000 was raised as of Feb. 27. According to the entry, Martinez was traveling back from Nevada with his family when the crash occurred. He was employed at Tres Potrillos in Medina Township.
