MEDINA – A convicted sex offender caught by U.S. Marshals after escaping police custody at MetroHealth Hospital was sentenced to three years in prison Nov. 10 after pleading guilty to several counts.
Brooks Howard, 33, of Medina, pleaded guilty and was sentenced Nov. 10 to two felony counts of attempted importuning and attempted gross sexual imposition. The incidents involved a young girl under 13 years old.
Howard also pleaded guilty to a felony count of obstructing official business for fleeing MetroHealth Hospital after injuring himself in a Medina Police chase Aug. 20 in the area of Public Square during the International Festival. He reportedly jumped off a building and got injured during a foot chase that ended in the 300 block of South Court Street.
Howard had a warrant out for his arrest due to his bond being revoked on the sex case.
Due to his injuries, Howard was flown to MetroHealth Hospital.
Medina Police said Howard was supposed to be in custody and it is uncertain why he was allowed to leave the hospital the next day.
U.S. Marshals arrested Howard at a residence on the city’s west side three days later.
Howard, who has been in the Medina County Jail since being taken by Marshals, appeared in crutches during the Nov. 10 hearing.
Howard was previously convicted of a sex offense in 2007 in Medina County of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and sentenced to a year in prison.
In the current case, he was also labeled a Tier II Sex Offender, meaning he will have to register his address with teh local sheriff for 25 years after his release from prison.
