MEDINA – A woman accused of stabbing her husband who was previously considered incompetent to stand trial has been restored to competency after treatment and pleaded guilty to an amended charge.

Diana Gerspacher, 62, changed her plea to guilty on a count of attempted felonious assault, a third-degree felony, after a Nov. 10 hearing. At the hearing, it was found an expert determined she was competent to stand trial.

In May, an expert ruled she was not. Since then, she was transferred from the Medina County Jail to an inpatient psychiatric facility. When someone is ruled incompetent, it means the defendant did not know the wrongfulness of her own actions at the time of the alleged crime or is unable to assist in her own defense.

Diana Gerspacher stabbed her husband, David, in the chest with a knife at their Beechwood Drive home in Medina Dec. 20. She called 911 and reportedly told a dispatcher she had stabbed him. He later recovered from his injuries after undergoing surgery.

Diana Gerspacher, who has been released from jail on bond, will be sentenced by Common Pleas Judge Joyce Kimbler Dec. 29.
