Spencer approves re-zoning of land parcel
Next step will be to file a referendum petition
SPENCER – A court stenographer was on hand March 15 to record events as Spencer Village Council voted to re-zone a parcel of land east of the E-Check facility on East Main Street from residential to commercial.

Council was evenly divided on their vote, forcing Mayor Dan DeRossett to cast the deciding vote in favor of the change. The next step is to file a referendum petition with the Medina County Board of Elections to have the issue, of whether or not the residents want a Dollar General store at that location, on the November ballot.

Frank Reed of the Spencer Fire Department asked council if there is any land available in town to build a new fire station. Council said there is land that was designated long ago in front of Firestone Park that is already city property. Councilman Jim Coleman said the question should go to the fire board before coming to council. Reed indicated the project is years away.

Committees
Coleman, zoning, reminded the board that any signs posted over the size of four square feet need permits, unless they are political.

Spencer Tire is considering repainting their building and proposed the idea of painting a mural on the side of the building with a historical timeline of tires through the years. Council seemed amenable to the idea.

Josh Kelling, parks, said he was approached by an individual interested in building wood duck shelters on public ponds. Council approved the suggestion.

Council also approved cold patching areas of the walking trails that could be hazardous to walkers and hikers.

Tom Gehring suggested looking at trees in the parks to determine if they need to be removed.

Coleman, safety, led a discussion regarding security at the Spencer Village Office building. Council approved spending up to $8,000 to begin the process of installing cameras, a DVR system and new door locks.

The annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny event will be held Saturday, April 1 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Town Hall.
