Support the bond issue and you will support our schools
To the Editor:
In 2004, after careful thought, and with our son ready to start kindergarten, we decided to move from Parma and make North Royalton our home. The overriding reason was the quality of the schools, teachers and staff. We have never regretted our decision. Our children have been taught by bright, engaging teachers and have flourished. We have always supported North Royalton school bond issues and levies and will continue to do so.
We are dismayed by the failure of the community to support past bond issues that would have raised funds for much needed building repairs. Some residents have used the board’s decision to use funds to build a new stadium as a big reason they will not support the recent bond issues. We believe that this thinking is both shortsighted and flawed. First, public records we obtained confirm that a complaint was made against the school district because the old stadium lacked proper access for those with physically disabilities. The district was facing a decision to fight the complaint or make needed repairs to a decades old stadium or build new. The decision to build new was the financially right one to make.
In addition, failure to support the bond issues is shortsighted. The cuts the board has indicated in Plan B may implement to save money and would make North Royalton a less desirable place to raise a family. Ask any family looking to relocate and they will tell you the quality of the schools is at the top of their list. Our city needs new families with school age children moving into our city to keep our housing values high, to keep our tax rolls growing, to keep the housing stock in good repair and to keep our businesses growing. Our schools need to offer 21st century programs and facilities for our city to remain growing and vibrant. For all of these reasons, we urge you to support our schools and our community by supporting the bond issue.
