Greater Lowell girls’ basketball coach Brian Martin didn’t need an official stat sheet to know senior captain Catherine Sweeney had a big night for the Gryphons in their 58-48 road win over Whittier Tech on Thursday.
But on the bus ride home, he glanced at the stats anyway and noticed something he had never seen before: a quadruple-double. Sweeney finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 steals.
“She’s come close before, but we’re usually winning so she doesn’t play a lot of the fourth quarters,’’ said a chuckling Martin, who is in his ninth year coaching Greater Lowell. “It’s outstanding; on an individual level, it’s the most impressive thing I’ve seen since I got here.’’
Sweeney, who also finished with three blocks, scored her 1,000th point earlier this month, the first girl to do that in program history.
For the Gryphons (12-1), the stats and the victory were as important as they were sweet. The win was Greater Lowell’s first at Whittier Tech’s gym in 10 years, and it pulled them into a three-way tie for first place in the Commonwealth Conference with Whittier Tech (9-3) and Mystic Valley.
“To get a spot in first place against a team we rarely beat in a place that’s tough to play is pretty special,’’ said Martin. “It ended up being pretty special.’’
