Boston audiences won’t see Nathan Chen at the Figure Skating World Championships. Hours after he won the bronze medal at Nationals Sunday in St. Paul, the record-setting 16-year-old injured his left hip during a jump attempt at the post-competition exhibition.
On Wednesday, Chen underwent hip surgery for an avulsion fracture, which is when a small piece of bone attached to a ligament or tendon tears away from the main part of a bone. In young athletes, avulsion fractures occur most commonly in the hip, elbow, and ankle.
Chen is expected to make a full recovery and return to the ice with restrictions in 8-10 weeks, according to a statement by US Figure Skating.
Grant Hochstein, who finished fourth at Nationals, will take Chen’s place and make his World Championships debut. The Worlds will be March 28-April 3 at TD Garden.
Chen’s injury is a big loss for the US team, since the teenager is widely considered the future of US men’s skating. He landed two quadruple jumps in his short program at Nationals and four in his free skate. Before that, no American man had landed as many quads in his short and long programs.
