Don’t pin thorny peace process on Israel alone

Jeffrey Sachs’s op-ed (“The Mideast: Contradictory promises that led to a century of conflict,’’ Feb. 20) suggests why the struggle between Israelis and Palestinians remains so intractable, and correctly concludes that a two-state solution is the most viable way to reach stable and enduring peace. However, he presents a deeply flawed narrative that suggests that Israel is solely responsible for undermining the peace process.

In fact, the Palestinian Authority has turned its back on multiple Israeli peace offers, and Palestinian leaders continue to loudly and vociferously charge that Israel is an illegitimate state that needs to be destroyed.

Reasonable people may disagree with decisions of the Israeli government, but it should be clear by now that jaundiced, one-sided presentations erode understanding, fuel polarization, and defeat efforts to bring the sides together. We do need a two-state solution, but Sachs is not helping the cause.
