I hope that Jeffrey Sachs’s use of prophetic teachings to place the history of the Israeli-Palestinian struggle in perspective will help people see how Jewish liberals are more faithful to their religion than those who now demand loyalty to the party in power. In the same way, religious Christians in the United States who are fearful of “the other’’ should reflect on the ancient Jewish stories Sachs resurrects.

Fealty to government produces no strength, no security, unless governance is just.
