Nyquist, winner of the Kentucky Derby, has developed a fever and was not shipped to New York for the Belmont Stakes, according a post on Facebook by trainer Doug O’Neill. He will remain at Pimlico in Baltimore, where he finished third in the Preakness Stakes Saturday.
The post on Facebook read: “Some of you may have heard that Nyquist spiked a fever this morning and we did not ship him to Belmont, as planned. We treated for the fever, and his temperature is back to normal. We are awaiting blood work results, which we should have tomorrow to see if he has a bug that needs to be treated. When he will go to Belmont and the next step, will be dependent upon the blood work report.’’
Blood Horse magazine reported that Nyquist had a temperature of 102, according to Dennis O’Neill, brother of the colt’s trainer. The normal temperature for a thoroughbred is between 99 and 101.
“I think he has some sort of virus we need to get under control,’’ Dennis O’Neill said. “He ate well, but his temperature was 102 so we decided not to ship. We drew some blood and will know more tomorrow.’’
Nyquist had been scheduled to ship to Belmont Park Monday.
