Boston College football player Troy Flutie, nephew of former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback Doug Flutie, was arrested in Natick early Saturday morning for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and has been suspended indefinitely from the team.
Flutie, 20, was arrested around 1 a.m. after Natick police said he crashed into a curb, according to The MetroWest Daily News. The newspaper reported the charges against Flutie are operating a vehicle under the influence of liquor, possession of an open container of liquor while driving, and being a person under the age of 21 in possession of liquor. Police also cited Flute with a marked lanes violation.
Flutie was arraigned at Natick District Court in Framingham on Monday. He was released without bail, and a pretrial conference was scheduled for June 20.
BC issued a statement on the matter, reading: “Troy has been suspended from the football team by Coach Steve Addazio pending further investigation and faces the possibility of additional University sanctions pending the outcome of the court proceedings.’’
Flutie, entering his redshirt sophomore season, is a 2014 graduate of Natick High School, where he had a historic football career. His senior year, Flutie set the state record for touchdown passes in a season with 47, and was named a Globe All-Scholastic and Athlete of the Year in Division 2. He is the state’s all-time leader in touchdown passes with 112.
Flutie played in eight games last season, completing 24 of 49 passes for 382 yards, 3 touchdowns, and an interception. Flutie was converted to wide receiver during spring practices.
