Rangers’ Hamilton out for year

Josh Hamilton, 35, will miss the entire season after more surgery on his left knee. The Texas Rangers said Monday that Hamilton, who has been on the disabled list all season, will have surgery June 8 in Houston. The surgery will be performed by Walt Lowe, whom the slugger visited for another opinion on his knee. Hamilton, the 2010 AL MVP and a five-time All-Star, had surgery twice on the knee last year . . . The Royals placed All-Star outfielder Alex Gordon on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right wrist. He will be out 3-4 weeks . . . Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier is expected to be out 8-10 weeks with a broken left hand suffered Saturday diving for a fly ball.

Gwynn: Wrongful death suit

Tony Gwynn’s widow and two children filed a lawsuit seeking to hold the tobacco industry accountable for the Hall of Famer’s death. The suit was filed in San Diego Superior Court by Alicia Gwynn and her children, Tony Jr. and Anisha Gwynn-Jones. The suit says Gwynn started dipping as a 17-year-old freshman at San Diego State, and dipped in his lower right cheek for more than 30 years. He died of cancer of the right parotid salivary gland on June 16, 2014, at 54.

Braves acquire Matusz, pick

The Braves have invested deeper into their already important June draft by acquiring lefthander Brian Matusz and the 76th pick in the draft from the Orioles in exchange for minor league pitchers Brandon Barker and Trevor Belicek. The competitive balance draft pick gives the rebuilding Braves five of the first 80 picks in the June 9-11 draft, including the No. 3 overall selection . . . Jordan Zimmermann is expected to miss at least one start for the Tigers with a right groin strain . . . Rangers outfielder Shin-Soo Choo didn’t even make it through one game in his return from the disabled list. Choo strained his left hamstring Friday and was placed on the 15-day DL again. He had been out since April 9 because of a strained right calf . . . Mets first baseman Lucas Duda has a stress fracture in his lower back and will be out 4-6 weeks . . . Indians reliever Joba Chamberlain has a strained left chest muscle and was placed on the 15-day DL.

Warriors’ Green only fined

Warriors forward Draymond Green’s received just a $25,000 fine — not a suspension— for kicking Thunder center Steven Adams in the groin in Game 4 Sunday night. Green’s foul was upgraded to a Flagrant Foul 2 and a fine. “We have determined that Green’s foul was unnecessary and excessive and warranted the upgrade and fine,’’ the NBA executive president ­Kiki VanDeWeghe said.

Fitzpatrick wants to return

Free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, locked in a contract stalemate with the Jets, said he wants to return to the team and has no plans to retire but he will not accept a low offer just to play, according to ESPN and the New York Post. Fitzpatrick, 33, is coming off the best season of his 11-year career with career highs in touchdown passes (31) and passing yards (3,905) for the 10-6 Jets . . . Pro Football Hall of Fame member Ron Mix faces up to three years in federal prison after pleading guilty in Missouri to a felony tax-fraud charge . . . The Browns cut veteran wide receiver Brian Hartline, 29, after one somewhat productive season (46 receptions, 523 yards, 2 TDs) for a savings of $3 million against the salary cap.

Man U fires its manager

Louis van Gaal’s time as Manchester United manager came to an end after two seasons at the club. Van Gaal spent almost $375 million in transfers at Old Trafford and won one trophy — the FA Cup in what proved to be his last match in charge . . . FIFA fired finance director and interim secretary general Markus Kattner after an internal investigation revealed he got irregular bonus payments worth millions of dollars . . . Duke freshman Virginia Elena Carta won the NCAA individual women’s golf title in Eug­ene, Ore., closing with a 3-under-par 69 and an eight-shot victory. Carta, a 19-year-old from ­Italy, broke the NCAA record by finishing at 16-under 272.

Doris Chen of USC shot 274 in 2014 at Tulsa Country Club. Carta, who led by six shots going into the final round of stroke play, won by eight over Demi Weber of Miami (71) and Haley Moore of Arizona (68). It was Duke’s first individual title in women’s golf since Anna Grzebian in 2005, which also was the last time the NCAA was held in Oregon. On the team side, Lilia Vu shot 67 to lead UCLA to the low team score, three shots better than Stanford.

. . . John Brophy, who coached the Toronto Maple Leafs for 2½ seasons before coaching in the ECHL for 13 seasons, died after a lengthy illness. He was 83.

. . . Josef Newgarden posted the fastest lap in the final full practice for the Indianapolis 500 at 227.414 miles per hour
