Rockets top Beverly, stay unbeaten in boys’ lacrosse

Reading boys’ lacrosse coach Charlie Hardy wanted the second-ranked Rockets to treat their last few regular-season games like state tournament games, and there was perhaps no better test ahead of the postseason than Monday’s matchup with No. 6 Beverly.

Both teams entered undefeated, but backed by a stellar performance by junior goalie CJ Hart, Reading came away with a 9-3 win on Beverly’s home turf.

“Just beating this team is an important win for us,’’ Hardy said. “They’re both undefeated, heck of a day, heck of a crowd. That was a tournament game. Low-scoring, physical game.’’

Hart finished with 14 saves, making six in the first quarter to give the Reading offense time to find its rhythm.

“If it wasn’t for CJ in the first quarter, the game was over,’’ Hardy said.

Freshman Mike Tobin led the Rockets (17-0) with three goals. Senior Colin Doherty and junior Kevin Tobin, Mike’s brother, both scored twice.

Beverly got on the board first when junior Sam Abate ripped a shot into the right side of the cage 3:25 into the game.

The Panthers (18-1) almost doubled their lead with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter as a shot sailed by Hart, but the netminder quickly turned around and pulled the ball back before it reached the goal.

“I actually got scored on that in warm-ups, like the same way, and I saw where it went so I just kind of took a good guess,’’ Hart said.

With 1:05 left in the first, Kevin Tobin found the back of the net to tie the game. The score remained 1-1 after 12 minutes.

Reading’s offense picked up halfway through the second quarter. Kevin Tobin scored his second goal before finding Mike Tobin for another score to give the Rockets a 3-1 lead with 4:59 left in the frame.

Mike Tobin added an unassisted goal to put Reading up, 4-1, at halftime.

“Once we start it up it’s rolling downhill from there,’’ Hart said. “We get goal after goal, we get confidence in each other, we start making the smart plays. We know what works, what doesn’t work.’’

Reading continued to surge in the third quarter, taking a 7-1 advantage into the final frame.

“Two great teams,’’ Hardy said. “They battled it out. The first quarter was theirs and I think we got the next three.’’
