Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura was suspended nine games and Orioles third baseman Manny Machado was penalized four games after their brawl Tuesday night. Both players were also fined an undisclosed amount Thursday by Major League Baseball. Ventura and Machado both have appealed their suspensions. They can continue to play until the process is complete. Ventura hit Machado in the back with a 99-m.p.h. fastball in the fifth inning in Baltimore. Machado charged the mound and punched Ventura in the head as the benches emptied . . . Rangers righthander Yu Darvish reported no problems after playing catch Thursday and was expected to throw his regular bullpen session Friday in Seattle. Darvish left Wednesday’s game in the third inning with shoulder stiffness in his third start since having Tommy John surgery last year. The Rangers also activated catcher Robinson Chirinos from the 60-day disabled list for his return from a broken right forearm . . . The White Sox shook up their roster, signing veteran first baseman Justin Morneau and designating veteran righthander Mat Latos for assignment. Chicago placed Morneau (elbow surgery) on the 15-day DL after he agreed to a $1 million, one-year deal.
He can as much as $2.5 million more in performance bonuses based on up to 400 plate appearances. Latos, who started 4-0 with 0.74 ERA, had a 7.25 ERA over his last seven starts.

Park eligible for Hall of Fame
Inbee Park completed the final requirement for the LPGA Hall of Fame, playing the first round of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in Sammamish, Wash. Park, 27, became the youngest woman to reach eligibility, accomplishing the feat with her 10th event of her 10th season. She has won seven major titles and has 17 LPGA Tour victories. Dealing with inflammation in the tendon and ligaments of her left thumb, Park closed with a bogey for a 1-over-par 72. She trailed first-round leader Brooke Henderson by five shots. Henderson made a hole-in-one on her fourth hole and birdied the final two holes for a 4-under 67 . . . Shawn Stefani, Tom Hoge, and Seung-yul Noh shared the FedEx St. Jude Classic lead at 5-under 65 in Memphis . . . Jay Don Blake birdied three of the last five holes at windy Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, Pa., for a 2-under 70 and the first-round lead in the Constellation Senior Players Championship . . . Spain’s Adrian Otaegui shot an 8-under 64 to take a two-stroke lead in the Lyoness Open in Atzenbrugg, Austria.

Montague files suit vs. Yale
Former Yale basketball captain Jack Montague sued the school, accusing the Ivy League university of wrongfully expelling him over a sexual assault allegation. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Connecticut, says Montague was punished over what he believes was consensual sex with a fellow Yale student. Yale says the lawsuit is factually inaccurate and baseless . . . The Ivy League adopted two new rules that will further limit time demands on its student-athletes. They will go into effect this fall. The first change gives student-athletes a 10-hour window of no athletic activity following their return from a road trip. The second requires a two-week recovery period with no allowable team athletic activity upon the completion of the team’s final contest of the season . . . Williams College captured its fourth straight Director’s Cup, given to the Division 3 school with the most success in athletics.

Broncos ink rookie QB Lynch
Broncos rookie quarterback Paxton Lynch signed a four-year deal worth approximately $9.5 million. The Broncos drafted Lynch out of Memphis with the 26th overall pick in the draft after losing Peyton Manning to retirement and Brock Osweiler to Houston. Lynch is competing with Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian for the starting job this summer . . . Despite a proposed offer by the Broncos of a six-year, $114.5 million deal to linebacker Von Miller, there is no agreement in sight and the sides are no longer negotiating at this time, according to multiple media sources . . . The Bengals agreed to a three-year contract extension with running back Giovani Bernard . . . The Bears waived backup quarterback Matt Blanchard and signed former Dartmouth QB Dalyn Williams.

Guilty plea tied to Boogaard
Jordan Hart, 33, a former minor league hockey player accused of selling prescription painkillers to ex-NHL player Derek Boogaard, who died of an accidental overdose, pled guilty in Manhattan federal court to the misdemeanor charge of possessing oxycodone. Boogaard, who played for the Rangers and Wild, died in 2011. There was no mention of Boogaard when Hart admitted obtaining prescription painkillers illegally in late 2010 and early 2011 . . . The Red Wings hired John Torchetti, former interim coach of the Wild, as an assistant coach . . . The US women’s national basketball team will host an exhibition series before the Olympics. It tips off on July 27 at the University of Delaware, followed by games on July 29 in Bridgeport, Conn. The tournament will finish up on July 29 at Madison Square Garden.
. . . Pele’s replica of the Jules Rimet Trophy, the original World Cup, has sold at auction in London for 394,000 pounds ($570,00).
