BC High staved off a last-minute flurry by Xaverian to hold on for a 10-9 home victory on Thursday and advance to the Division 1 South lacrosse final.

The Eagles will play Newton North for the sectional title on Sunday at 5 in Norwell.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead with two goals before the midway point of the first quarter, and extended their lead to 3-0 by the end of the period.

“The start was huge,’’ said BC High attacker A.J. Kucinski, the school’s all-time leader in goals. “Against a good team like that, you have to get out quick and establish a lead, so you can settle down a little bit and keep working with that.’’

Kucinski, who did most of his damage from a starting position behind the net, netted four goals and added three assists, both high marks for the game.

But it was his teammate, senior midfielder Colin Carroll, who swung the game in BC High’s favor by winning 17 of 23 faceoffs, scoring unassisted in the third quarter off one faceoff win.

“Colin was huge throughout the whole game,’’ BC High coach Steve Lydon said.

“You saw them start to throw poles [i.e. defenders] out there on the wing, and get out of what they’re comfortable with. He totally changed the game for us. Not only coming up with the faceoffs but handling the pressure of the poles and creating some offense for us . . . He got the game ball for the day.’’

Trailing, 10-6, with 4:53 remaining in the game, Xaverian coach Tim Gardner called a timeout to mount one final push.

The Hawks scored three goals to cut the deficit to 10-9 with 31 seconds to go, but Carroll calmly won the decisive faceoff, allowing the Eagles to run out the clock.

“We went a man down three times in the fourth quarter,’’ Lydon said. “You can’t give them that many chances on the man-up in the second half.’’

Xaverian netminder Mike Toomey recorded 10 saves.

BC High and Newton North, who will play for the chance to advance to the Division 1 state semifinals, each finished 16-3 in the regular season.

“We’ve got to re-scout,’’ Lydon said. We’ve got a new team coming in, so we’re trying to prepare, trying to give ourselves the best chance to make the most of this opportunity.’’
