All Newton North girls’ track coach Joe Tranchita could do was watch, and hope for some help.
With Newton North not fielding a team in the 4 x 400-meter relay of Sunday’s MIAA Division 1 track and field championships at the Reggie Lewis Center, the Tigers had to rely on their competition to hold off Lincoln-Sudbury, with whom Newton North was in a tight race for the team title.
In the end, Tranchita’s team received the help it needed, with Lexington and Acton-Boxboro finishing ahead of the Warriors, who took third in the event, to help give Newton North its second straight divisional title and fifth in the last seven years.
“We needed help from some teams in a lot of different events,’’ said Tranchita. “Big thanks to Lexington and Acton-Boxboro in that final race to get by L-S, that was the big difference. But we also had some really big performances.’’
Newton North took first in two of the three field events, with Roxann Wint taking the shot put before Liana Reilly won the high jump.
The Tigers also won the 4 x 200-meter relay. Christina Galvagno, who was on the 4 x 200 team, took third in the 300-meter dash before finishing fifth in the long jump.
“We weren’t [favored to win], but we just went out and had fun, did what we had to do, and got it done,’’ said Galvagno. “It’s so incredible to look back at everyone and just be so proud of what everyone [was able to] do.’’
The Tigers finished with 57 points, just 2 ahead of L-S, which was led by Ariel Keklak’s record-setting performance in the 1,000-meter run.
The Warriors got 43 of their points in distance events, which included wins in the mile run and 4 x 800-meter relay.
Like Newton North, Lexington successfully defended its 2015 title on the boys’ side, its 61 points besting second-place Newton North by 17.
The Minutemen took two of three relays, the 4 x 800 time of 8:01.25 less than one second shy of the meet record set by Lowell in 2013. Noah Shute, a member of the 4 x 200 team, won the 55-meter dash before coming back to finish fourth in the 300 dash, despite being seeded 16th.
“[Lexington sprinting coach Lisa George-Cox] told me I should be the first to the break [line], which I [ended up doing],’’ said Shute, “and then [she told me] just don’t lose my speed, just stick with it. So that’s what I tried to do and I guess it worked pretty well.’’
Zachary Manickas-Hill (mile) and Thomas O’Donoghue (high jump) turned in runner-up performances for the Minutemen.
“[Not everybody] had their best performance, time-wise,’’ said Lexington coach Bill Babcock, “but place-wise, and what it meant in terms of team points, I couldn’t have asked for anything more from these kids.’’
