Duquesne can’t stop Hinds (37)

Jabarie Hinds scored a career-high 37 points and the University of Massachusetts outlasted Duquesne, 108-99, in overtime on Sunday in Pittsburgh.

UMass hit its first three shots in the extra session, including Hinds’s 3-pointer with 3:04 left, which put the Minutemen up, 92-86. Duquesne’s Micah Mason hit a jumper to make it a 4-point game, then the Dukes resorted to fouling. But UMass (11-13, 4-8 Atlantic 10) made 16 of 20 from the line in the last 2:43 to prohibit a comeback.

Duquesne went up by 2 with 1:55 to go in regulation on a pair of free throws by Mason, but didn’t score again. Donte Clark’s free throws with 41 seconds left tied it to prompt overtime.

Hinds was 13 of 20 from the field with seven 3-pointers. Trey Davis scored 26 points, while Clark and Antwan Space had 17 apiece. Space added 17 rebounds, a career high.

Mason led Duquesne (15-10, 5-7) with 29 points and 10 assists, both career bests. L.G. Gill added 20 points.

Vermont 92, Hartford 81 — Kurt Steidl scored a career-high 26 points and the Catamounts prevailed at home to snap a two-game losing streak.

Steidl made 5 of 9 3-pointers and 9 of 10 free throws. Dre Willis added 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for Vermont (15-12, 7-5 America East). Ernie Duncan and Darren Payen scored 15 points each. Vermont shot 55 percent, 43 percent from the arc.

Pancake Thomas scored 35 points for the Hawks (7-20, 2-10), who lost their seventh straight.

Thomas has scored at least 35 points four times this season. Jalen Ross added 16 points. Thomas was 8 of 13 on 3-pointers, the rest of the team just 4 of 18.

UMass-Lowell 96, UMBC 92 — Logan Primerano scored 14 of his career-high 29 points in the last 4:17 and the River Hawks edged the Retrievers in Lowell.

Primerano, a freshman, was 16 of 17 from the line — including 12 of 13 in the last four minutes. Jahad Thomas scored 23 points for UMass-Lowell (11-15, 7-6 America East), while Isaac White added 15. Will Darley led UMBC (6-21, 2-10) with 31 points, his career best.

Stony Brook 59, UNH 58 — Jameel Warney rejected Jaleen Smith’s last-second layup with his eighth block to extend the host Seawolves’ nation-leading 18-game winning streak.

Tanner Leissner had 26 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats (15-10, 8-4 America East), whose four-game win streak ended.

UNH coach Bill Herrion missed the game after his mother died Saturday night.

Albany 108, Maine 64 — Ray Sanders scored 22 points as the Great Danes crushed the Black Bears in Albany, N.Y.

Sanders was 9 of 14 from the field with 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals for Albany (21-7, 10-3 America East), which has won six of seven.

Issac Vann led Maine (8-18, 4-9) with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including three 3-pointers.

Women’s basketball

UConn 85, Temple 60 — Moriah Jefferson had 25 points, 8 assists, and 8 steals to help the top-ranked Huskies beat the scrappy Owls in Philadelphia for the Huskies’ 61st straight victory.

Breanna Stewart added 24 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 blocks for UConn (24-0, 13-0 American), which has won 101 straight games against non-ranked teams.

Virginia 61, BC 50 — Mikayla Venson scored 19 points and Lauren Moses added 11 points and 15 rebounds as the Cavaliers (14-12, 4-8 ACC) prevailed at Conte Forum.

Mariella Fasoula (14 points) was the only player in double figures for the Eagles (13-12, 1-11).

Women’s hockey

BC 3, Vermont 0 — Kenzie Kent, Meghan Grieves, and Andie Anastos scored, and Katie Burt made 16 saves, as the top-ranked Eagles (32-0-0, 22-0-0 Hockey East) blanked the Catamounts (8-22-2, 6-14-2) in Burlington, Vt.

BU 6, UNH 2 — Sammy Davis scored twice and Victoria Bach had a goal and four assists as the Terriers (19-11-2, 16-4-2 Hockey East) dominated the Wildcats (10-21-1, 7-15-0) after a scoreless first period in Durham, N.H.
