The town of Chesterton gained a new police chief and fire chief this week.

Tim Richardson, who comes to the town from the Michigan City Police Department, was appointed by the Chesterton Police Commission on June 28.

Richardson, a lieutenant, will begin his duties Aug. 16, according to a release.

He’s served as commander of the LaPorte County Drug Task Force since 2017 and spent 27 years in Michigan City.

Robert Byrd, former chief of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District, has served as interim chief since February when then-interim chief Nicholas Brown resigned.

Meanwhile, the town council named Eric Camel fire chief on June 28. He’s served as interim chief since Dec. 14, 2020, according to a release.

He began his firefighting career in 2010 with the Beverly Shores Fire Department.

He joined Chesterton in 2013 and completed the South Bend Fire Officer Academy in 2019.

A 2001 Chesterton High graduate, Camel has a bachelor’s degree in business and aviation from Valparaiso University.
