A Highland man was accused of shooting at a woman inside his work truck after she rebuffed his sexual advances, according to charging documents.
The woman and another man were taking him home on Interstate 80 in his own red pickup truck June 17 after a work party because he was too drunk, the affidavit states. Her husband followed in a white cargo van.
Jose U. Navarrete, 37, of the 8900 block of Branton Avenue, was charged June 19 with several felonies.
His $15,000 cash surety bond was posted June 21. His initial hearing is set for July 9 before Magistrate Mark Watson.
During the ride, Navarrete made several sexual advances to the woman in the front passenger seat, which she refused. He groped her, then licked her face, according to court documents.
The woman eventually hit Navarrete in the face. He responded by starting to choke her, documents state.
He pulled out a gun and fired it near her neck, so close she had burn marks that police later documented, the affidavit states. A bullet went through the windshield. He also threatened to kill them both, documents state.
When the truck stopped on the highway, the woman jumped out and ran to her husband’s cargo van, leaving her glasses and cellphone in Navarrete’s truck.
Navarrete forced the man still driving his truck to take him home, charges state. He was “beaten and threatened,” according to charging documents.
The woman and her husband followed the truck to Navarrete’s house, where another fight broke out. While there, she grabbed a ladder from the van and hit Navarrete in the head, knocking him unconscious, it states.
The co-worker, who drove the truck, said he fired his gun as a warning shot in the air. At some point they took Navarrete’s gun and all three went to a nearby Family Express, 8910 Indianapolis Blvd, where they recounted what happened to police.
A state trooper corroborated some of the woman’s story. She was making a traffic stop on I-80 nearby when she saw the woman jump out of the truck and run to the nearby van, charges state.
Police went to Navarrete’s home, where he refused to come out. Eventually he did, swearing at officers and threatening to kill them, according to the affidavit.
After they impounded the red Ford F-250, police found a bag with 24 grams of cocaine, a suspected steroid and hypodermic needles, charges allege.
Navarrete was charged with attempted murder, a level 1 felony; criminal confinement, a level 3 felony; possession of cocaine, a level 4 felony; criminal recklessness and battery by means of a deadly weapon, both level 5 felonies; strangulation, sexual battery and unlawful possession of a syringe, all level 6 felonies.
He was also charged with two misdemeanors.
