Four standout track and field athletes from Santa Cruz County — Evie Marheineke of Archbishop Mitty, Eli Fitchen-Young and Heidi Green of Santa Cruz, and Logan Brantley of Aptos — were named 2025 Wharf to Wharf Scholarship winners on Tuesday.

In addition to their success in the athlete arena, the recently graduated quartet provided leadership on their respective teams and shined academically. All four athletes are committed to NCAA Division I programs.

Marheineke, who will compete in cross country and track and field at UCLA, and Fitchen-Young, who will compete in cross country and track and field at Duke, were winners of the Howard Marcus Memorial Scholarship ($16,000).

Green, who will compete in cross country and track at Santa Clara University, and Brantley, who will compete in track and field at UC Davis, were winners of the Otis Chandler Memorial Scholarship ($6,000).

The 2025 Wharf to Wharf race, the celebrated six-mile race from Santa Cruz to Capitola, takes place on July 27 at 8:30 a.m.

Women’s basketball

WNBA >> Former Stanford University All-American Haley Jones, a Santa Cruz resident, will suit up for her third WNBA team this season.

Jones, selected sixth overall in the 2023 WNBA Draft by the Atlanta Dream but waived at the outset of the season, signed to a hardship contract by the Dallas Wings (1-11) Tuesday morning, the team announced on social media.

The 6-foot-1 guard/forward previously signed a hardship contract with the Phoenix Mercury (8-4) and averaged 2.3 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assist over four games, She was released from that contract June 8.

Guard/forward Kaila Charles also signed a hardship deal with the short-handed Wings on Tuesday.

The Wings were scheduled to host the Golden State Valkyries (5-5) on Tuesday evening, after the Sentinel went to press, and play at the Connecticut Sun (2-8) on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
