Current exhibit: “FACE of Fiber Show and Creative Sisters: Harmony in Texture and Color,” featuring the fiber art by Cari Cook and artwork by Margo McGrew.
Cari Cook: I grew up in a family of creative people in Massachusetts. My dad did woodworking and my mom, my sisters and I all sewed. My sister Margo McGrew, who is my guest artist, is a fine artist who paints using water soluble paints. I graduated from High School and got a job working in my older sister’s bridal shop. It was fun helping women fine their perfect dress for their wedding. I connected with an old friend from high school. We dated, got married and moved to Colorado. I became a house cleaner and did that for about 10 years. I retired because of back issues. I had been doing alterations on the side and did that full time. I owned horses and was doing horse blanket wash and repair.
I’ve always done creative sewing and made quilts. I was making art clothing and was encouraged to join The Handweavers Guild of Boulder. I learned how to dye silk scarves at that time. At their annual sale I sold my art clothing and hand-dyed scarves. When I discovered felting. I had to learn everything I could about it. I joined a study group, took classes and read books. I loved being able to make lightweight soft wool art piece you can wear. I was selling at different venues and decided to take a break.
God opened the door for a new opportunity for me. I was invited by a friend to be her guest artist. Then I applied and was juried and accepted into the Art Center of Estes Park. Fast forward 3 years and now I am the featured artist who has invited my sister Margo to be my guest artist. It’s a blessing to be able to do what I love and be a part of a show that highlights my work.
