A 17-year-old boy with four other teenagers as his passengers crashed in Oakland while trying to elude officers, the California Highway Patrol said.
All five boys in the Audi SUV survived the wreck Friday and were arrested, CHP spokesman Officer Brandon Correia said. They were between the ages of 14 and 17, he said, and were taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland for evaluation.
The driver did not have a driver’s license, Correia said. He was arrested on suspicion of felony evasion of an officer. The potential charges against the other four in juvenile court were not disclosed immediately.
According to the CHP, officers saw the Audi racing a Corvette at speeds around 120 mph on westbound Highway 4 near Railroad Avenue around 3:30 a.m. The race then turned into a chase, with the Audi going up to 130 mph, Correia said.
“Absolutely inexcusable driving behavior,” Correia called it, adding that the driver “held all his passengers’ lives dangerously in his hands while driving in a completely reckless manner.”
“We are relieved it ended well with no injuries,” he said. “Please think twice before driving like a maniac.”
The Corvette got away after accelerating when the pursuit moved from Highway 4 and onto southbound 242 where it merges with Interstate 680. The CHP received reports the Corvette reached speeds of 140 mph.
The Audi kept going with officers behind it onto westbound Highway 24 and then through the Caldecott Tunnel. The driver then tried to get onto westbound Highway 13, but crashed into the concrete center divider, Correia said.
Police planned to book all five teens into Juvenile Hall after their release from Highland Hospital.
