Detroit rapper Casada Sorrell, who is also known by his stage name Sada Baby, was released Wednesday from jail after he was arrested on drug charges in Shelby Township, according to jail records and multiple media reports.

Sorrell, 32, was held overnight in the Macomb County Jail on one count of possession of less than 25 grams of cocaine, court and jail records show. The charge stemmed out of neighboring Sterling Heights.

His Detroit-based attorney, Blake Wright, was not immediately available for comment on Wednesday.

Court records show Sorrell was arraigned Wednesday before 41A District Court Judge Eric D. Shepherd. He was released on a $5,000 personal bond.

The felony charge carries a penalty of up to four years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

A preliminary exam was scheduled for 1 p.m. April 28, according to records.

Sterling Heights police Capt. Mario Bastianelli confirmed that Sorrell was taken into custody Tuesday by Shelby Township police on a warrant issued by Sterling Heights for the drug case.

According to previous Macomb Daily reporting, Sorrell was stopped by police in January on Mound Road near 18 Mile after an officer noticed the black Dodge Ram he was driving had improperly tinted windows.

It was discovered he had a warrant for his arrest out of Sterling Heights for driving without a license. The charge was filed in June 2023.

Officers also located possible illegal contraband inside of the Ram that was recovered and secured as evidence for a potential additional charge.

The contraband was taken for evidence, and charges were pending further investigation. The suspected narcotics were sent for testing and came back positive.

At the arraignment hearing on the misdemeanor traffic charge in February, Sada Baby’s attorney, Wright Blake, said he may file a legal motion regarding whether police had the right to stop Sorrell.

Sorrell said in an online video posted in February that he was profiled by police on the traffic case.

“My truck got profiled because of where I was at the time of night,” Sorrell said in the video, which appeared on Detroit Rap News and included additional remarks by him.

He vowed he will beat the case.

Months later, Sorrell was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, specifically, less than 25 grams of cocaine, according to court records.

Shelby Township police pulled him over Tuesday afternoon and discovered he was wanted on the arrest warrant issued by Sterling Heights police. He was taken into custody and transported to jail.

His booking photograph, which shows the rapper with his eyes wide, was labeled as an “epic expression,” by celebrity news news organization TMZ.

The rapper gained recognition in 2018 for his hit song “Bloxk Party,” which went viral and led to his signing with Asylum Records. His debut studio album, “Skuba Sada 2,” a sequel to his 2017 mixtape, peaked at No. 125 on the US Billboard 200.

Sada Baby’s hit song “Whole Lotta Choppas” also gained significant popularity on TikTok and received a remix from New York rapper Nicki Minaj, which peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100.
