Grief counselors were on hand Wednesday at Richmond High School after a student was killed in a two-car crash over the weekend.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday identified the victim as Cheyenne Grace Rashotte,17, of Richmond. She died in McLaren Macomb hospital in Mount Clemens from injuries sustained in a Saturday night crash in Casco Township, authorities said.

Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Cheyenne was remembered by her family as a “people pleaser” who “would light up a room.”

“She had an encouraging personality and loved to cheer on her family and friends through their life events,” the family said in her obituary notice.

Cheyenne was enrolled in nursing school with plans of becoming an anesthesiologist. She also worked at Fin’s Eatery & Spirits in New Baltimore and was a community service volunteer.

“Our hearts are with the student’s family, friends, classmates, and all who knew and loved her,” Richmond Superintendent Brian Walmsley said in a letter to families in the Richmond Community Schools district. “During this time of unimaginable loss, we ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy as they grieve and begin to process this tragedy.”

According to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, the teenager was driving a 2016 Jeep Cherokee when she “failed to yield” to a 2009 Ford F150 pickup truck at the intersection of Gratiot Avenue and Division Road.

The truck struck the Jeep’s driver door, with the crash damage trapping the teen inside the SUV. A Lenox Township woman who was driving the pickup truck, along with a male passenger and a 2-year-old toddler, were not injured, deputies said in a news release.

On Wednesday, a team of grief counselors visited each classroom at Richmond High School to speak with students as well as staff members. Walmsley said in the letter. He said grief support services are available to all students, not just at the high school, but across the district.

“We know that processing the death of a classmate will take time,” Walmsley said. “Everyone grieves differently, and the range of emotions our students may experience is wide.”

Cheyenne is survived by her parents, Kirstin and Keith McDonald; siblings, Maci McDonald and Addisynn McDonald; and other family members. She was predeceased by her father, Lucas Rashotte.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Kaatz Funeral Directors in Richmond. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Sunday and noon-3 p.m. Monday.
