WALNUT — For the first time in 60 years, Mt. San Antonio College baseball is the California Community College Athletic Association state champion.
The Mounties won the title Monday with an 8-5 win over West Valley College in 13 innings at Mt. SAC’s Mazmanian Field.
It was the Mounties’ first state title since the team won back-to-back titles in 1964 and 1965.
“It’s just amazing,” said Mt. SAC coach John Knott. “It’s not an easy journey. There’s been several good Mt. SAC baseball teams through the years.
“It takes a talented group and to be selfless and being hungry at the end of the year.”
The key to the extra-inning win was a solo home run by freshman designated hitter Landon White, who graduated from San Dimas High School, in the top of the ninth to tie the score 5-5.
“Wow, a 3-0 count, and they worked it back to 3-2, and I hit it and thought he caught it at the fence,” said White, who will transfer to Gonzaga next year. “I knew our team needed some momentum.”
White, who was named MVP of the championship tournament and was also named 3C2A Player of the Year, led with four hits, scored a run and had an RBI.
Four innings later, with freshman right fielder Jackson Giacone on second, Mt. SAC freshman left fielder Terrell Jackson Jr. hit a single to right that scored Giacone to take a 6-5 lead.
“It was crazy,” said Jackson, who was hitless at the plate before the hit. “I was bad at the plate all day, but my coaches believed in me, and I just had to come through for my guys.”
Mt. SAC added two runs on a two-run single by sophomore third baseman Ty Thomas (Cal State Fullerton commit) to take an 8-5 lead. The hit scored Jackson and sophomore center fielder Bryan Bradshaw (UC San Diego commit), who doubled to reach base.
