Saquon Barkley will become the highest-paid running back in NFL history after his record-setting season helped the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl.
The Eagles are giving Barkley a two-year contract extension worth $41.2 million with $36 million guaranteed, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity because the extension hasn’t been announced, said Barkley’s new deal includes $15 million in incentives.
Barkley ran for 2,504 yards in the regular season and playoffs, breaking Terrell Davis’ record for most yards rushing combined in one season. He had 2,005 yards in the regular season before sitting out the final game with a chance to break Eric Dickerson’s single-season mark.
The Eagles signed Barkley to a three-year, $37.75 million deal in free agency last year after the New York Giants allowed the 2018 No. 2 overall pick to walk away.
Dallas signed defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa before the franchise tag deadline Tuesday and Minnesota declined to give the tag to quarterback Sam Darnold, clearing the way for him to hit the open market next week.
Only two players were given the tag for 2025 before Tuesday’s deadline with Cincinnati receiver Tee Higgins getting it on Monday and Kansas City guard Trey Smith getting it last week.
Among the top players other than Darnold who can sign with any other team as free agents starting March 12 after not getting tagged are Tampa Bay receiver Chris Godwin, Miami safety Jevon Holland, Philadelphia defensive standouts Milton Williams, Zack Baun and Josh Sweat, and Baltimore left tackle Ronnie Stanley.
The Cowboys locked up Odighizuwa by agreeing to an $80 million, four-year contract with $58 million guaranteed, according to his agent. Agent Sam Leaf Ireifej confirmed the deal to The Associated Press and said it includes a $20 million signing bonus. A franchise tag would have been worth $25.1 million for 2025.
The Seattle Seahawks cut outside linebacker Dre’Mont Jones and three other veterans on Tuesday to create salary cap space ahead of the start of free agency next week.
The 28-year-old Jones had 9 1/2 sacks in two seasons with the Seahawks, who signed him to a three-year, $51 million deal in 2023. Moving on from Jones freed up more than $11 million for Seattle.
The Seahawks also released safety Rayshawn Jenkins, defensive tackle Roy Robertson-Harris and offensive lineman George Fant.
Combined, the moves create more than $27 million in cap space for Seattle.
The New York Jets are releasing wide receiver Davante Adams ahead of the start of the NFL’s new league year next week, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
The move, which was expected, will save the Jets $29.9 million in salary cap space.
The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team didn’t announce the move. NFL Network and ESPN first reported the Jets’ decision to release Adams.
Kicker Brandon McManus, 33, is staying with the Green Bay Packers after agreeing to a three-year, $15.3 million contract with a $5 million signing bonus, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been announced. ESPN first reported the agreement.
BOXING
Big boxing in New York for long meant Madison Square Garden, in recent years Barclays Center as well.
Fight night in Times Square promises to be a whole different scene.
“I think we’re expecting half a million people, for free,” said Hall of Fame boxer Oscar De La Hoya, whose Golden Boy Promotions has three fighters on the May 2 tripleheader.
The fighters on the card are known: Ryan Garcia against Rolando “Rolly” Romero in the main event; Devin Haney against Jose Ramirez in the co-main; and Teofimo Lopez against Arnold Barboza Jr. in a title fight as the opener.
Not disclosed yet is what the setup will look like, how fans can access it, and just how exactly organizers got permission to close down one of the busiest attractions in the heart of one of the busiest cities in the world.
“It took a lot of money,” De La Hoya said, with a laugh.
The card is headlined by Garcia, who is returning from the one-year suspension he was given by the New York State Athletic Commission after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs when he fought Haney last April in Brooklyn. Garcia knocked Haney down three times and won a majority decision that was eventually overturned and ruled a no-contest.
SOCCER
Arsenal is all but guaranteed to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League after recording the biggest-ever win away in the knockout stage of Europe’s elite tournament, beating PSV Eindhoven 7-1 on Tuesday in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
The Gunners were ruthless in the first leg of their last 16 tie and romped to an emphatic win despite injuries to key forwards including Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus.
“We were fluid. We had enthusiasm, the drive and the hunger,” Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice said.
