Even though it was already eliminated from advancing in the FIFA Club World Cup, LAFC had a chance to go out on a positive note.
Denis Bouanga scored in the 84th minute to put LAFC ahead and needing to hang on for 6-plus minutes to secure a victory over Flamengo on Tuesday night at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.
That lead was brief, as Wallace Yan netted the equalizer 2 minutes later in what turned out a 1-1 draw.
The one point was enough for the Brazlian side, which had already secured its spot in the knockout round, to finish at the top of Group D, a point ahead of Chelsea.
LAFC went 0-2-1 in its first appearance in the tournament.
Even though it was outplayed much of the match — outshot 19-5 and outpossessed 66%-34% —LAFC had a near-miss as Mark Delgado hit the far post in the first half. And then it appeared that LAFC had scored its first goal of the tournament — after a 2-0 loss to Chelsea and a 1-0 loss to ES Tunis — in the 38th minute on a header from Marlon. But the goal was disallowed due to an offsides call.
The Black and Gold finally got their first goal late in the match, when Bouanga raced past the Flamengo defense and deposited a shot past keeper Agustin Rossi.
Flamengo came right back, with Yan running through a porous LAFC defense and blasting a shot past keeper Hugo Loris from just outside the penalty spot.
Flamengo will face Bayern Munich in the round of 16 Sunday at Miami Gardens, Fla.
Benfica 1, Bayern Munich 0: Andreas Schjelderup scored in the 13th minute as Benfica finished atop of Group C.
The game was played in a 97-degree temperature in Charlotte, N.C., at Bank of America Stadium. Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni was attended to by the medical staff in the 25th minute due to heat-related issues and was replaced in the 55th.
Schjelderup ran onto a cross from Fredrik Aursnes and scored from near the penalty spot.
Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich put the ball in the net in the 61st minute but the goal was disallowed because Harry Kane was in an offside position in the line of sight of goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.
Benfica, from Portugal, will face Chelsea on Saturday.
Auckland City 1, Boca Juniors 1: At Nashville, Tenn., Christian Gray scored Auckland City’s first goal of the Club World Cup early in the second half and the amateur team gained a draw against Boca Juniors as the Argentine club was eliminated.
Boca went ahead in the 26th minute when Lautaro Di Lollo’s header hit a post and bounced in off goalkeeper Nathan Garrow’s arm for an own goal.
Gray tied the score in the 52nd with a header from Jerson Lagos’ corner kick.
Chelsea 3, Esperance 0: At Philadelphia, Liam Delap scored his first goal for Chelsea and Enzo Fernández had two assists in a win that helped the Premier League power clinch a berth in the knockout round.
Tosin Adarabioyo scored on a header in the third minute off first-half stoppage time and Delap scored two minutes later. Tyrique George put the finishing touches on the win with his goal in second-half stoppage time.
