Banning senior Alina: Argueta has been named the Daily Breeze girls athlete of the year after having a storybook season to wrap up her high school athletic career.

All year, from the fall to the spring, Argueta was a fixture in the Banning girls sports programs, playing and excelling in three sports and leading two teams to L.A. City Section championships, earning two City Player of the Year honors and earning Daily Breeze all-area recognition in each sport.

“Freshman year, I didn’t play basketball, sophomore year, I joined basketball, but had an injury,” she said. “Junior year, I played a full year basketball and softball, but there was no flag football yet.

The Pilots fielded their first flag football team in the fall. Argueta’s tri-sport season would be complete.

Argueta, the quarterback, led the flag football team to the Open Division championship. The Pilots were the seventh seed and recorded three consecutive upsets (No. 2 Marshall, No. 6 Eagle Rock and No. 1 San Pedro) to win the section’s second flag football Open title.

“Everyone had the mentality of let’s go, let’s leave it all out there,” she said of winning the final after losing to San Pedro twice during the regular season.

In the winter, Argueta, the point guard, helped lead the Pilots to the L.A. City Section Division II championship, a second consecutive City title in basketball. Banning defeated San Fernando 57-36 in the final.

“For her to come to this program and give what she gives us is tremendous,” basketball coach Bridgett Conejo said after the final. “She’s selfless and a true competitor. What she brings to this team is so important. We’re more confident when she’s on the court.”

To wrap up her season, Argueta went to softball and hit .487 with 21 RBIs, helping the Pilots to a third-place finish in the Marine League and a spot in the L.A. City Section Open Division playoffs.

Up next for Argueta is college, where she will narrow her sports to softball at Cypress College, with plans of transferring to a four-year school after that.
