Helping others is good for you.

That’s not cliche, that’s science.

Two years ago, Harvard researchers published a study about the “Helper’s High,” showing how your brain churns up a burst of the feel-good chemical dopamine when you give something to somebody else.

So, consider this a chance to feel good. We’ll give suggestions every weekday until mid-December.

You’re welcome.

CHARITY NAME: Community Action Partnership of Orange County (CAP OC)

WHAT IT DOES: Broadly speaking, the mission at CAP OC is pretty simple: to end poverty. Specifically, the huge Garden Grove-based nonprofit serves as a connector organization to dozens of programs that help people with immediate and long-term needs, everything from diapers for babies to meals for seniors. CAP OC also includes the Orange County Food Bank, which collects and distributes food for hundreds of food pantries around the county.

HOW TO GIVE: Visit CAP OC’s “volunteer hub” portal at capoc.org/volunteer or make a food drive pledge by going to capoc.org/food-drive.

CHARITY NAME: Friendship Shelter

WHAT IT DOES: The nonprofit’s tag line explains its mission this way: “Ending homelessness in south Orange County, one person at a time.” This starts with two small shelters in Laguna Beach, with about 65 beds combined, that offer meals, laundry services and medical care. It also includes long-term related services, connecting qualified clients to public rental assistance, health care and counseling. About 300 formerly homeless people currently are living in permanent dwellings with help from Friendship Shelter.

HOW TO GIVE: The agency accepts financial donations, gifts and volunteer work. It also seeks landlords willing to accept tenants who use public assistance. To help, contact friendshipshelter.org.
