Hollywood titan James Cameron, distinguished conductor Carl St.Clair and Sammy Lee, the first Asian American Olympic gold medalist, are among the 10 new luminaries who will be inducted into the Orange County Hall of Fame.

The OC Board of Supervisors announced the third class of honorees at its Tuesday meeting.

Similar to previous years, the 2025 list recognizes trailblazers in civics, sports, entertainment and philanthropy.

Along with Cameron, St. Clair and Lee, the list includes the surfer Robert August, known for his participation in the 1966 documentary “The Endless Summer;” college basketball standout Eddie Sheldrake, who later co-founded the restaurant and bakery chain Polly’s Pies; Ed Caruthers, a civil rights activist and high jumper who took silver at the 1968 Olympic Games; and Gaddi Vasquez, the county’s first Latino supervisor and who later was appointed the director of the Peace Corp and a United States ambassador.

Philanthropists James Irvine II, who formed the Irvine Company and the James Irvine Foundation; Ed Laird, who empowered youth through scouting and promoted conservation through the Bolsa Chica Conservancy; and Henry and Susan Samueli, owners of the Anaheim Ducks, who have gifted more than a $1 billion through their foundation to benefit a variety of Orange County communities, round out the list.

Since 2023, when the board established the county’s own Hall of Fame, supervisors have formed an ad hoc committee each year to select the new class of 10 inductees. Eligible nominees must have spent at least a decade in Orange County as a resident or business owner, have been a civic leader, or had one major life experience or won a major award in the county.

Supervisors Don Wagner and Janet Nguyen chaired this year’s committee.

Wagner, who announced the honorees, called them “very worthy individuals” who were chosen with input from the community.

“I know we have left a lot of people out, but there is always next year,” he added.

The inaugural 2023 class of inductees included Walt Disney, singer Gwen Stefani, golfer Tiger Woods and Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. Last year, the county honored civil rights icon Sylvia Mendez, Carl’s Jr. founder Carl Karcher and Leo Fender, the inventor of the first commercially successful electric guitar, among others.

Hall of Fame plaques are displayed for public viewing in the lobby of the county administration offices.

The 2025 Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held in Santa Ana on Dec. 9.
