Disneyland will soon begin construction on the world’s first “Coco” attraction that will take riders to the Land of the Dead with Miguel, Hector and other Rivera family members when the new boat ride debuts at Disney California Adventure.

Walt Disney Imagineering has submitted early plans with the Anaheim Public Works department to begin work on the “Coco” attraction that will be predominantly nestled backstage between Pixar Pier and Paradise Gardens.

The scope of the work is focused on a backstage area bound by Disneyland Drive, Katella Avenue, Downtown Drive and the backside of the Incredicoaster. The early plans call for work along Disneyland Drive and Katella Avenue on sidewalks, gutters, trees, planters, landscaping, irrigation and fencing.

The plans do not show the outline of the ride building that is expected to be squeezed between Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta, the Disney California Adventure parade storage building and the Incredicoaster track.

The new “Coco” attraction, based on the 2017 Pixar animated film, will be built on a plot of underused land occupied by a backstage access road connecting to Disneyland Drive.

A backstage gate between Pixar Pier and Paradise Gardens will eventually serve as a passageway to the Westside expansion area of Disney California Adventure. Visitors would cross a themed bridge passing over Disneyland Drive to get between Pixar Pier and the new DisneylandForward expansion area south of the Pixar Pier Hotel.

Disneyland has not yet announced an opening date for the new “Coco” boat ride, but the attraction is expected to debut in 2027 or 2028.

The new “Coco” attraction is just one of several major projects planned for the Anaheim theme park resort as part of Disney’s ambitious $1.9 billion DisneylandForward expansion plan.

Grading is underway on the new Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab attractions coming to Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure.

Disneyland has submitted plans for the two Marvel attractions that are under review by various city departments with vertical construction expected to follow pending approval.

Disneyland has not submitted plans yet with the city for the “Avatar”-themed land planned for Disney California Adventure’s Hollywood Land, a new eastside parking structure and a pedestrian bridge over Harbor Boulevard.

Work on the “Avatar”-themed land is set to begin in early 2026 when Disney closes the “Monsters Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue” dark ride to make way for construction.

Work will begin in fall 2026 on the 6,000-space parking structure, pedestrian bridge, transportation hub and security screening area that will serve as the new eastside entrance to the resort.
