


The UC Santa Cruz women’s volleyball team earned a pair of sweeps on the opening day of the Coast-to-Coast Invitational in Newport News, Virginia, on Saturday.
The Banana Slugs beat Christopher Newport 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 in their opener and Salisbury 25-14, 25-20, 25-16 in their second match.
Samantha Taylor had 12 kills against Christopher Newport, Peyton Tazelaar had 10 kills, nine digs and four aces, and Sydney Ahrendt had eight kills. Sinead Beaupain had 17 assists and Emily Pasion had 21 digs and five assists.
Ahrendt had nine kills in the win over Salisbury, while Taylor and Tazelaar each had eight kills. Beaupain had 22 assists, eight digs and three aces, and Pasion had had 19 digs, three assists and two aces. Tazelaar had 12 digs.
UCSC (12-4) plays Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon.
Boys cross country
Artichoke Invitational >> Scotts Valley won the 2.3-mile race for small enrollment schools at the Artichoke Invitational in Half Moon Bay on Saturday.
The Falcons posted a score of 119 in the 30-school race. Nueva (138) took second and Junipero Serra (154) was third.
Senior Jack Brownfield (12:37; sixth), junior Mason Lantz (12:43; eighth), junior Ben George (13:12; 28th), senior Jonah Verinsky (13:23; 40th) and junior Spencer George (13:27; 43rd) scored for the Falcons.
Saint Mary’s College senior Mateo Malko-Allen won in 11:56.
Girls cross country
Artichoke Invitational >> Scotts Valley junior Ashlyn Boothby (13:25) took first out of 158 runners in the 2.3-mile race for small enrollment schools at the Artichoke Invitational in Half Moon Bay on Saturday.
Boothby’s time also bettered the large school race winner, Menlo-Atherton junior Tatum Olesen (14:03), as well as the 67 runners in that field.
Boothby has won all five races she has competed in this season, including four invitationals.
Senior Amber Boothby (14:07) took fourth and helped Scotts Valley place third out of 18 teams in its race with a score of 63. St Mary’s College (56) won the race and Willow Glen (58) took second.
Freshman Ava Decleve (15:23; 20th), junior Diana Alivov (15:31; 25th) and senior Rafaela Putnam (16:17; 39th) also scored for the Falcons.
Surfing
EDP Vissla Pro Ericeira >> Santa Cruz’s John Mel tied for 73rd place at the World Surf League’s EDP Vissla Pro Ericeira in Portugal, event No. 5 on the Challenger Series.
Mel, ranked No. 74 on the CS, took fourth in Heat 5 of the Round of 96 on Sunday with a two-wave score of 8.23. He finished behind No. 44 Cole Houshmand (13.26) of San Clemente, No. 6 Dylan Moffat (11.54) of Australia, and No. 65 Thiago Camarao (11.17) of Brazil.
Camarao, also eliminated, tied for 49th overall.
Men’s soccer
At Holy Names 1, UCSC 0 >> Jehimy Arias scored in the 81st minute to sink the Banana Slugs on Saturday at Chabot College in Hayward.
UCSC had four shots on goal, all were stopped by goalie Alexis Jimenez.
UCSC (1-6-3) plays at Fresno Pacific (2-6-0) on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Men’s tennis
ITA West Regional >> UCSC came up short on the second day of the ITA West Regional in Claremont on Saturday. Two Banana Slug teams lost in the quarterfinal round of the doubles tournament. Both teams were aiming to be the first Santa Cruz duo to reach the ITA Semifinals since ’18.
Ryan Lam and Praneet Varade lost their match 8-6 to Caltech’s Daniel Wen and Kyle McCandless. Sam Hall and Jason You also lost by the same score to the Pomona duo of Eshaan Lumba and Matthew Feng.
The only Banana Slug playing singles on Saturday was Lucas Chen in the Flight A consolation. He lost to Warren Pham of CMS in straight sets.
Women’s tennis
ITA West Regional >> Four UCSC players made Saturday’s quarterfinal rounds of the ITA West Regional in Claremont on Saturday.
In Flight B, the Banana SLugs’ Julia Chiaradia Azzi and Natalie Sprenger fell in straight sets to opponents from Caltech and Pomona-Pitzer, respectively.
In Flight C, Jolie Seemayer made it to the semifinal after she came back to defeat Whittier’s Keeley Arendt 2-6, 6-3, 10-3. In the semifinal two hours later, the sophomore lost to Whittier’s Maci Davis in straight sets. Daniela Christian lost her Flight C quarterfinal to Caltech’s Grace Wilson 4-6, 6-2, 12-10.
Angelina Powers lost to Caltech’s Halle Holzbauer in the Flight B consolation bracket.
