Hot, humid weather with showers and thunderstorms is expected through the week, with more heat to follow over the weekend, the National Weather Service said.

“A low-pressure system is going to be lifting through the region tomorrow, and that will bring a warm front and some early day chances of thunderstorms,” said David Kook, a meteorologist with the agency’s White Lake Township office. “As it passes through in the afternoon and evening, we’ll have a risk of strong to severe thunderstorms. We’re watching tomorrow very closely.”

The forecast also calls for hot and humid weather in southeast Michigan through midweek. Kook said humidity values will reach somewhere in the vicinity of 70%.

“It’s going to be humid, but the heat index is still going to be in the mid- to upper-80s,” he said. “But there’s a wealth of moisture, and it’ll be near record highs for daily moisture in the air, which is going to lead to heavier rainfall and potential flooding.”

High temperatures in the region on Tuesday are expected to reach between 85 and 88 degrees, according to the weather service. Detroit’s high for Tuesday may reach 86. The city’s average monthly temperature in June is 79.7.

NWS meteorologists also predict small chances for showers and thunderstorms later Tuesday and into Wednesday morning.

Several rounds of rainstorms are possible into Thursday morning, the agency said. More than an inch of rainfall is likely in some areas of the region, according to the weather service.

Wednesday’s high temperature in Detroit is expected to dip to 84, the service said.

The picture also gets soggier. There’s a slight to enhanced risk for severe weather for most of the region, the agency said. It added that all hazards are possible, including damaging winds, large hail, heavy rain, and tornadoes.

Detroit’s high temperature should fall slightly to 81 on Thursday then bounce up to 85 and closer to normal on Friday. Conditions are also expected to dry out.

Heat starts on Saturday when the mercury could rise as high as 90 in the Motor City.

There is a chance of storms on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the weather service said.
