Huron-Clinton Metroparks will celebrate Juneteenth on Monday in Harrison Township with a special day of free swimming, storytelling, book giveaways and more.

Titled the June Jubilee: Connecting Stories, in Honor of Juneteenth, organizers say Lake St. Clair Metropark and the agency’s chain of facilities is proud to both host and support the event, which encompasses freedom, culture, and community.

“These events provide opportunities for reflection, education, and celebration for residents across Macomb County and beyond,” Metroparks officials said in a news release.

The event takes place from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. Monday, June 23 at Lake St. Clair Metropark on Metro Parkway and Jefferson Avenue in Harrison Township.

The family-friendly event is fun for all ages and includes free entry to the pool, live storytellers, book giveaways, guided nature hikes, food vendors, and a performance from the Nanou Dijapo African Drum Ensemble.

It will also include a hands-on community art workshop led by Detroit-born artist Halima Afi Cassells.

Participants will contribute to a larger recycled art installation that Cassells will unveil in the Harrison Township park later this summer.

Designed to resemble a sturgeon habitat, the sculpture will highlight the importance of recycling and protecting fragile ecosystems. It will be constructed using recyclable materials collected from Metroparks.

In addition to the June Jubilee workshop, Cassells will host a series of sessions throughout the summer to complete the installation.
